For my family's cross-country road trip this summer (I am cheating and flying out to meet them in South Dakota because I can only really take 10 days or so off in August before fall semester starts) - my parents are renting an RV and driving for 3 weeks... There will be all 5 of us in the RV at some points, so my dad is laying down some interesting "necessities" to bring, in his words... it gets weirder as you scroll down
General Guidleines for RV Trippers - luggage advisement:

Items for RV trip - no closets, no storage- travel light!!
Note: RV trip - minimum luggage - no closets!!
1 bathing suit
1 dungaree shorts
3 underwear (out & wash on way back)
3 t shirts (go out - wahs on return trip)
3 sport shirts
1 tanker top
1 toiletry kit - 1 lb. - able to put in purse size
1 dungaree pants (semiformal)
1 set sneakers
1 shoes, multipurpose
1 six pack MGD
1 Cabernet - CA, 1999 vintage
1 cooler large for first aid
1 six pack beer,"lite" for first aid
1 pillow stuffed with raincoat
4 lb. cheddar Extra Sharp for emergencies
16 lb. cheese curls for emergencies (can double as air bags in crashes)
11 lb. big Macs for snacks and to help lube the RV (freeze -store in cooler)
17 lb. various chips for mosquito repellant (at least 5 lb. as BBQ!!)
1 Blouse/shirt, dress (will become casual outfit for return)
1 pair socks for loose change for tolls
1 hat for donations at Yellowstone
1 peptobismo for bears
1 deck cards for serious entertainment (no Saddam cards please)
112 pesos for tips (they look like quarters and they are 2cents!)
1 hammock for bad cot nights (that can double as a raincoat)
1 bottle vodka for sterilizing cuts, kitchen equipement,mouthwash,etc.
